RWG expansion
Rotterdam World Gateway (RWG) has reached an agreement with its shareholders DP World, CMA-CGM/Terminal Link, HMM and MOL, and the Port of Rotterdam Authority on a phased expansion of RWG's terminal. In the first phase, an additional berth for deep-sea activities will be created, and the focus will be on further capacity expansion as well as future-oriented facilities where automation, sustainability, and connectivity remain priorities.
The additional berth is an expansion of RWG's existing terminal according to the same proven concept; fully automated, CO2 neutral, and dedicated handling facilities for all modalities. For the latter, a CEF grant has also been awarded by the European Union. The total investment amounts to approximately €500 million and initially involves civil works, quay cranes, storage modules with automatic stacking cranes, and automated guided vehicles.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority has already started constructing the quay in the Amalia Harbour, which will be completed in 2024. The berth is expected to be operational by the end of the fourth quarter of 2025, with a commercial rollout in 2026.
Ronald Lugthart, CEO & Chairman of the Board of RWG: "With this decision, we are taking a significant step forward in expanding our activities while continuing to provide reliable, efficient, and flexible handling to our customers and stakeholders. We are not only increasing capacity but also enhancing connectivity in (urban) logistics and the hinterland with future-oriented facilities, such as a fully automated depot, integration with the internal track, expansion with a second barge feeder/short-sea quay, and shore power facilities. Together with all parties in the chain, RWG will keep innovating to optimise the around-the-clock economy in both the Netherlands and the hinterland, supporting the continued growth of the port of Rotterdam."
